Nicholas Kemmer (born 7.12.1911) is an English theoretical physicist and a Fellow of the Royal Society (1956). He is a grandson of M. P. Avenarius. In 1935 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Zurich. In 1936 — 40 he worked at the Imperial College in London, in 1940 — 46 in Cambridge and Montreal and in 1946 — 53 at the University of Cambridge. From 1953 he has been professor at the University of Edinburgh.
His work is in the field of mathematical physics, quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, the theory of nuclear forces and quantum statistics. In 1938, independently of others, he predicted the existence of neutral mesons, proposing a symmetrical theory of nuclear forces, and he calculated the magnetic moment of the nucleon.
