Kirko, Igor Mikhailovich

Igor Mikhailovich Kirko (born 16.04.1918) is a Soviet physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR (1966). He was born in the village of Bezhitsa, Bryansk Region. He graduated from Moscow University (1941). In 1948 — 67 he was director of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR, from 1972 head of a laboratory in the Department of Polymer Physics of the Urals Scientific Centre of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Perm), and from 1980 head of the department of magnetohydrodynamics at the Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics of the Urals Scientific Centre of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Perm). His research concerned magnetism, electrodynamics, electrohydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, in particular the magnetohydrodynamics of extreme parameters, the magnetohydrodynamics of liquid metals and the problems of building energy storage devices. Together with others he laid the foundations of the physics of the phenomena in MHD pumps. His work was also concerned with the study of large-scale motions of conducting liquids in strong magnetic fields.
