Kolli, Robert Andreyevich

Robert Andreyevich Kolli (25.06.1845-2.08.1891) was a Russian physicist. He was born in the village of Petrovsko-Razumovskoye near Moscow. He graduated from Moscow University (1869). He worked at Moscow (1873—76) and Kazan (1876 — 86, professor from 1878) universities, and from 1886 at the Petrovskaya Agricultural and Forestry Academy (Moscow). His research was in the field of electromagnetism. He was the first to prove experimentally the inertia of ions, and he proposed an experiment to demonstrate the inertia of electrons. In his paper “On the existence of a ponderoelectrokinetic part of the energy of the electromagnetic field” he showed the correctness of J. Maxwell's hypothesis of the displacement current. He also studied polarisation in electrolytes and electromagnetic oscillations, and constructed a number of instruments.
