Konopinski, Emil Jan

Emil Jan Konopinski (born 25.09.1911) is an American physicist. He was born in Michigan City (Indiana). He graduated from the University of Michigan (1933), where he worked; in 1936 —38 he was at Cornell University, and in 1933 —77 he was professor at Indiana University (in 1943 — 46 he worked at Los Alamos). His research was in the fields of atomic and nuclear physics and the physics of elementary particles. Together with G. Uhlenbeck he constructed (1940) the theory of forbidden spectra and gave (1941) the first calculation of a forbidden spectrum. Independently of others he developed (1941) the theory of beta decay (the Konopinski — Uhlenbeck theory) and formulated (1953) the law of conservation of lepton charge.
