Kravets, Torichan Pavlovich

Torichan Pavlovich Kravets (22.03.1876 —21.05.1955) was a Soviet physicist and a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1943). He was born in the village of Volkovo (now in the Tula region). He graduated from Moscow University (1898) and began work at the Moscow Engineering School in A. A. Eichenwald's department. In 1914—19 he was professor at Kharkov University and in 1923 —26 at Irkutsk University. In 1926 — 51 he worked at the State Optical Institute and at the same time taught at Leningrad University (professor from 1934). His research concerned the spectroscopy of solutions of coloured compounds, geophysics, the physics of the photographic process and the history of physics. He studied the absorption of light in solutions of coloured substances and the oscillations of water in closed basins, and he investigated the latent photographic image and developed its theory. He contributed to photographic sensitometry. In particular, he carried out a series of studies of the nature of the photolytic colouring of silver halide and of the centres of the latent photographic image. For developing a new system and new instruments for determining the sensitivity of emulsions he was awarded a USSR State Prize in 1946.
