Dmitri Alexandrovich Lachinov (22.05.1842-28.10.1902) was a Russian physicist and electrical engineer. He was born in the village of Lesnoye Konobeyevo (now in the Ryazan region). He graduated from St Petersburg University (1864). From 1865 he taught at the St Petersburg Agricultural Institute.
His main research was in the field of electromagnetism and optics. In 1880, independently of M. Deprez, he showed that it is possible to transmit electric power over long distances without considerable loss provided that the voltage is raised. In 1882 he proved the advantages of connecting arc lamps in parallel, at the same time pointing out the possibility of a mixed connection. He is also known as the author of a number of technical inventions and applications.
He was a founding member of the physics division of the Russian Physico-Chemical Society and of the electrical engineering section of the Russian Technical Society, and general commissioner of the Russian section at the International Exposition of Electricity (Paris, 1881).
