Lee, Benjamin

Benjamin Lee (1.01.1935-16.06.1977) was an American theoretical physicist. He was born in Seoul. He graduated from the universities of Miami (1956) and Pittsburgh (1958). In 1960-66 he worked at the University of Pennsylvania (professor from 1965), and in 1966—73 he was professor at the State University of New York (Stony Brook) and at the Institute for Theoretical Physics. From 1973 he was head of the theoretical department of the E. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and from 1974 professor at the University of Chicago. His work was in the field of the theory of elementary particles, quantum field theory, scattering theory and cosmology. He was one of the first to study the group of SU(6) symmetry (the mid-1960s) and to elucidate the physical nature of the psi particles (1975—76). He established the quark composition of the family of 9 pseudoscalar and 7 charmed mesons. Independently of others he proved that unified field theories of the weak and electromagnetic interactions can be renormalised, and he predicted a heavy lepton (1972).
