Møller, Christian

Christian Møller (22.12.1904-14.01.1980) was a Danish theoretical physicist and a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. He was born in Notmark. He studied at the universities of Copenhagen, Rome and Cambridge. In 1933 — 75 he worked at the University of Copenhagen (professor from 1943), in 1954—57 he was also director of the theoretical group at CERN, and in 1958 — 71 director of the Institute of Theoretical Nuclear Physics (NORDITA). His research was in the field of relativity, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and elementary particle physics. In 1940, together with L. Rosenfeld, he postulated the existence of two meson fields — a pseudoscalar one and a vector one. He is known for the “Møller method” in special relativity, which is used in deriving the general Lorentz transformation. In 1945—46 he extended Heisenberg's S-matrix theory, and in 1952 (together with P. Kristensen) he studied non-local interaction in field theory and considered the question of the so-called dynamically deformable form factor. He gave a formula for the matrix element of the interaction energy of two relativistic electrons (the Møller formula). He proposed a new pseudotensor in the theory of gravitation. A member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The O. Rømer Medal (1966) and the H. Ørsted Medal (1970).
