Podolsky, Boris

Boris Podolsky (29.06.1896-28.02.1966) — an American theoretical physicist. He was born in Taganrog. In 1913 he moved to the USA. He graduated from the University of California (1918). In 1929-30 he worked in Leipzig, and in 1934 at the Ukrainian Physico-Technical Institute (Kharkov). From 1935 he was professor at the University of Cincinnati. His work concerned quantum electrodynamics, relativistic electrodynamics, the generalisation of Maxwell — Lorentz electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, magnetohydrodynamics, applied mathematics and biophysics. In 1932, together with V. A. Fock and P. Dirac, he developed the many-time formalism and constructed a relativistically invariant form of quantum electrodynamics. He studied the role of the fine-structure constant. He is known for the “Einstein — Rosen—Podolsky paradox”, connected with the discussions of determinism in quantum mechanics.
