Racah, Giulio

Giulio Racah (9.02.1909 - 28.08.1965) was an Italian theoretical physicist. He was born in Florence. He graduated from the University of Florence (1930), where he worked in 1932 — 37; from 1937 he was professor at the University of Pisa, and from 1939 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research concerned atomic and nuclear physics, relativity and quantum theory. Independently of others he developed a general method of calculating the matrix elements of symmetric operators. Independently of E. Wigner he laid (1942—43) the foundations of the theory of angular momenta. He is known for the Fano-Racah coefficients.
