Schweidler, Egon

Egon Schweidler (10.02.1873-12.02.1948) was an Austrian physicist and a member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. He was born in Vienna. He graduated from the University of Vienna (1895), where he worked (professor in 1906 — 39), and from 1911 also at the university's Physical Institute. His work concerned chiefly the study of radioactivity. Together with St. Meyer he determined the half-life of polonium (140 days), established its transformation into lead, and detected (1899) the deflection of radium rays in a magnetic field. He was the first to establish (1905) the statistical character of the law of the transformation of elements.
