Shubin, Semyon Petrovich

Semyon Petrovich Shubin (31.07.1908 — 28.02.1938) — a Soviet theoretical physicist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1935). Born in Liepāja. Graduated from Moscow University (1927) and was kept on as a postgraduate student under L. I. Mandelstam. From 1932 he was head of the department of theoretical physics of the Urals Physico-Technical Institute and head of the chair of physics at the Urals Physico-Mechanical Institute (Sverdlovsk). His work concerned the theory of oscillations, solid-state physics, statistical physics, quantum electrodynamics and the theory of quantised fields. Together with I. E. Tamm he laid (1931) the foundations of the quantum-mechanical theory of the photoelectric effect in metals, and together with S. V. Vonsovsky he constructed (1934 — 36) the polar and s—d exchange models of ferromagnets.
