Smirnov, Adrian Anatolyevich

Adrian Anatolyevich Smirnov (born 16.02.1908) — a Soviet theoretical physicist, an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1967), vice-president (1970-74). Born in Novgorod. He graduated from Leningrad University (1932). In 1932-39 he worked at the Ural Physico-Technical Institute in Sverdlovsk, in 1939-49 at the Ural Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and in 1949-50 at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1950 — 55 he was head of a department of the Laboratory of Metal Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and from 1955 of its Institute of Metal Physics. His research was in the theory of imperfect metallic crystals and some questions of field theory. He extended the theory of the electronic energy spectrum of ordering alloys (1947), the quantum theory of the electrical resistance of metals and alloys, and the molecular-kinetic theory of ordering and diffusion in metals and alloys, in particular in interstitial alloys. He predicted the effects of the influence of alloy ordering on diffusion (1954), later detected experimentally. He constructed the theory of “order—disorder” phase transitions in alloys with several superstructures and at high pressures (1974) and the theory of the decomposition of alloys containing impurities at the sites and interstices of the crystal lattice (1955). He extended the theory of the scattering of slow neutrons in ordering alloys. He proposed a new method of studying the shape of the Fermi surface in metals and alloys (1959). State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1978).
