Stronger than two

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT: To demonstrate how easily objects can be moved with the help of machines.
MATERIALS: two brooms, a rope or thick cord three metres long, two helpers.
Изображение
METHOD: Tie the rope to the handle of one broom.
Place the two brooms 50 cm apart and wind the rope three times round their handles.
Pull the free end of the rope while your helpers try to pull the brooms apart.
RESULTS: Although the helpers are trying to pull the brooms apart, you can bring the brooms together on your own.
WHY? The brooms and the rope behave like a block and tackle — the force you apply is multiplied by the rope wound round the broom handles, so that you gain almost five times in force over your helpers.
