The system of physical quantities and regularities

The PQR system is a multi-level (multi-layered) dimensional construction made up of physical quantities (PQ), the elements of the system.  The dimensions of PQs are, as a rule, expressed in the SI system. At each system level  the PQs have ordered dimensional links. Transitions between neighbouring elements (PQs) from left to right are made by multiplying by the dimension of velocity (LT-1), and transitions from top to bottom – by dividing by  the dimension of length (L) or time (T), depending on whether such a transition slants to the left or to the right. To make PQs of different system levels easier to tell apart visually, they are usually colour-coded.

Regular system interrelations of PQs are detected by the rule of a highlighted parallelogram or a highlighted line (when the highlighted parallelogram is seen, as it were, edge-on). In system links illustrating a given natural regularity, the products (ratios) of the dimensions of the elements (PQs) at opposite (adjacent) vertices of the highlighted parallelogram are necessarily equal to each other.

Coloured pictograms denoting the different system levels and the possible interrelations of their PQs help to find one’s way around the system when looking for regular interrelations.

There may be six or more system levels, so separate system images are used for a planar (in one plane) display of the system cells with the needed PQs and of the needed regularities.  It is convenient to group PQs and regularities by these sections: mechanical, thermal and radiative, electromagnetic and quantised PQs and their regularities.

In student practice no more than two or three separate images of the system are usually enough – to find one’s way confidently in most branches of physics. At the same time, users of the system are spared the need to memorise many formulas, especially in electromagnetism. In this way the system plays the role of a “smart” crib sheet.

The author of the system is Anatoly Stepanovich Chuev – a lecturer in physics at the State University of Management (GUU) and Bauman Moscow State Technical University (Moscow). The main provisions of the theory behind the construction of the PQR system have been published in various sources, a list of which is available on the author’s website . The same site holds the program and a description of the electronic version of the PQR system, free to download and use.
