Voigt, Woldemar

Woldemar Voigt (2.09.1850-13.12.1919) was a German theoretical physicist and a corresponding member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences (1900). He was born in Leipzig. He graduated from the University of Königsberg (1874). In 1875 —83 he was professor at the University of Königsberg, and in 1883-1914 at the University of Göttingen. His work was in the fields of crystal physics, optics, magneto-optics, the theory of elasticity, thermodynamics, mechanics and the kinetic theory of gases. He developed the theory of the dispersion of light (1878 — a mechanical one, 1888 — an electromagnetic one). In 1887 he used transformations close to the Lorentz transformations. In 1899 he drew attention to the perturbation of atoms by an electric field. He attempted to give a classical explanation of the Zeeman effect (1899). He constructed (1899-1900) the theory of magneto-optical phenomena (the Lorentz — Voigt theory). He was the author of the two-volume “Theoretical Physics” (1895-96).
