Adaptation

Adaptation of the eye, (from the Late Latin adaptatio — fitting, adjustment), the adjustment of the sensitivity of the eye to changing conditions of illumination. On passing from bright light to darkness the sensitivity of the eye rises, the so-called dark adaptation of the eye; on passing from darkness to light the sensitivity falls — light adaptation of the eye. When the colour of the illumination changes, the spectral sensitivity of the eye changes as well (see Colour adaptation).
