Phase modulation

A form of modulation of oscillations in which the signal being transmitted controls the phase of the carrier HF oscillation. If the modulating signal is sinusoidal, the spectrum and the shape of the signals  in the case of phase modulation and of frequency modulation coincide. Differences appear with more complicated shapes of the modulating signal. Phase modulation is used mainly as an intermediate conversion into frequency modulation with a highly stable carrier frequency.
