Estermann, Immanuel

Immanuel Estermann (31.03.1900-3.03.1973) was a German experimental physicist. He was born in Berlin. He graduated from the University of Hamburg (1921), where he worked until 1933. In 1933 —50 he was at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh (professor from 1945), in 1950 — 55 head of a division of the Naval Research Laboratory (Washington), in 1955 —59 research coordinator, and in 1959 —64 director of research (London). His research concerned molecular beams, solid-state physics, low-temperature physics and superconductivity. Together with O. Stern he observed (1929) the diffraction of atomic beams and measured (1933 — 34) the magnetic moment of the deuteron.
