Despite the difficulties that arise in the course of study at the physics faculties of universities, not one of them suffers a shortage of students. Every year many students are eager to study physics. No one says that all graduates of a physics faculty will become great scientists in the future. Someone, perhaps, will go into trade and devise innovative marketing moves, someone will take up computer science, someone will go deeper into other branches — only a few will work in their field. But nevertheless!
When applying to the physics faculty of Moscow State University, applicants have a great many questions. The first of them runs like this: what is the admission plan for the first year of the physics faculty? Four hundred places at this faculty are funded from the Federal budget. In other words, four hundred people can count on free education at Moscow State University. The astronomy speciality has twenty state-funded places. If an applicant did not get in through the competition but passed the entrance examinations successfully, he can freely enter the fee-paying form of study at this faculty.
The second most important question is the question of which examinations must be passed to enter the physics faculty of Moscow State University. Note that the list of examination tests is laid down in a document called the Rules of Moscow State University (Appendix 1). Last year the entrance examinations for the physics faculty were the Unified State Examination results in physics, mathematics and the native language, Russian. In addition, applicants had to take in writing an additional test in the specialist subject (physics). However, there is a separate category of citizens who are obliged to take the entrance examinations directly at Moscow State University, and only after that will their admission to the physics faculty be possible.
The physics faculty of Moscow State University consists of forty departments. Applicants are concerned about when they need to decide on attachment to this or that department. Surely straight after admission? No. The first two years of study at the university are considered general education. In the third year of the university each student writes a first course paper, and does so at the department he chooses himself. If the specific character of that department's work suits him quite well, he can continue his cooperation with it further. In this way a student of the physics faculty determines his specialisation.
