Egil Andersen Hylleraas (15.05.1898-28.10.1965) was a Norwegian theoretical physicist. He was born in Engerdal. He graduated from the University of Oslo (1924). In 1931 — 36 he worked at a scientific institute in Bergen, and in 1937—65 he was a professor at the University of Oslo.
His work concerned the theory of the crystal lattice, mathematical physics, and the physics of atoms and molecules, in particular calculations of the energy of atoms (helium, beryllium, boron, carbon) and molecules, and nuclear physics. He was the first to begin studying (1948) the inverse problem of scattering theory.
He founded a school of theoretical physicists.
