Yuri Andreyevich Osipyan (born 15.02.1931) is a Soviet physicist, an academician (1981, corresponding member 1972). He was born in Moscow. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (1955). In 1955 — 62 he worked at the Institute of Metal Science and Metal Physics of the Central Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy. From 1963 he has been at the Institute of Solid State Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (director from 1973), and also professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (from 1970).
His research concerned solid-state physics. He studied the influence of effects on the kinetics of martensitic phase transformations at low temperatures, the mechanical properties of whiskers, and the interaction of dislocations and electrons in crystals. He discovered and studied the photoplastic effect, electron spin resonance at dislocations, the inversion of the conductivity type of semiconductors on the introduction of dislocations, and dislocation conduction and luminescence. These studies gave rise to a new field of solid-state physics, dislocation physics.
