Predvoditelev, Alexander Savvich

Alexander Savvich Predvoditelev (11.09.1891-27.12.1973) - Soviet physicist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1939). Born in the village of Bukrino (now in Ryazan Oblast). Graduated from Moscow University (1915) and worked there (from 1930 — professor). In 1937—46 he was also director of the Research Institute of Physics of Moscow University, and from 1939 - head of a laboratory at the Power Engineering Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. His work was in the fields of molecular physics, thermophysics, gas dynamics and hydrodynamics, the physics of combustion, solid-state physics, and the history and methodology of physics. He proposed a method of solving problems of homogeneous combustion. He put forward the idea of collective interactions in condensed systems, proposing various continuum models of thermal motion. He obtained a generalised equation of state. He compiled the multivolume “Tables of Thermodynamic Functions of Air”, which found wide practical application. He developed a method of describing acoustic dispersion in liquids and gases that proved highly effective in solving many problems of physical acoustics. Awarded the USSR State Prize (1950) for the monograph “The Combustion of Carbon” (1949)
