in thermodynamics, a function of state of the independent parameters that determine the state of a thermodynamic system. The characteristic functions include the thermodynamic potentials and the entropy. All the thermodynamic properties of a system can be expressed through a characteristic function and its derivatives with respect to the independent parameters (volume, temperature and others). A characteristic function is additive: the characteristic function of the whole system is equal to the sum of the characteristic functions of its parts.
