Quincke, Georg Hermann

Georg Hermann Quincke (19.11.1834-13.01.1924) was a German physicist and a corresponding member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences (1879). He was born in Frankfurt an der Oder. He graduated from the University of Berlin (1858), where he became professor in 1865. In 1872 —75 he was professor at the University of Würzburg, and in 1875—1907 at the University of Heidelberg. His research concerned molecular physics, acoustics and optics. He studied molecular forces in liquids, capillary phenomena, the properties of materials and their behaviour in electric and magnetic fields. He developed a method of determining the dia- and paramagnetic susceptibility of liquids and gases. In 1866 he invented an instrument for measuring the length of sound waves using the phenomenon of interference (Quincke's tube).
