Wataghin, Gleb (Gleb Vasilyevich Vatagin)

Gleb Wataghin (Gleb Vasilyevich Vatagin) (born 3.11.1899) is an Italian theoretical physicist and a member of the Accademia dei Lincei (1960). He was born in Birzula in Kherson province (now the town of Kotovsk). He studied at Kiev University (1918-19). In 1920 he moved to Italy. He graduated from the University of Turin (1922), where he worked. In 1939 — 56 he lived in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) and did much for the development of physics in that country; in particular he was professor at the university and the organiser of the Institute of Cosmic Ray Physics. In 1956 — 69 he was professor at the University of Turin and director of the Institute of Physics at the university. His research was in the field of general and special relativity, non-linear and non-local quantum field theory, the physics of cosmic rays and astrophysics. In 1934 he was the first to attempt to construct a quantum field theory with an elementary length. He constructed (1943 — 44) the statistical theory of the multiple production of cosmic-ray particles. He founded a school of theoretical physicists (T. Regge, S. Fubini, M. Cini and others). A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
