How should a physics classroom be equipped?

We all remember very well from our school days that the physics and chemistry rooms were the most interesting for us. It was here that the secrets of many phenomena were revealed to us and interesting experiments were carried out; the lesson went on not only with the help of a textbook and an exercise book, but also with the help of a variety of instruments. That is why the physics classroom in a school must be equipped with the latest technology.

Only this will help to study most effectively the structure of substances, their physical phenomena, properties and characteristics. After all, the main task of the subject is to acquaint pupils not so much with theory as with practice. So how should a physics classroom be equipped?

First of all, one must think about the room itself. It must be a separate classroom, with an adjoining storeroom without fail, where portable demonstration materials will be kept. The classroom must be well lit, and so it is better if it is a room on the south side of the school building. Besides natural light, it is important to take care of artificial lighting. In addition to portable demonstration materials, various tables and stands may be placed on the walls of the classroom, which will accompany the pupil throughout the whole of his study of physics. Besides this, the classroom must contain objects and apparatus, and the equipment with which laboratory and practical work is carried out.

Even the desks in a physics classroom must be fitted out specially, with frequent laboratory work in mind, and have a special surface. Do not forget electricity supply either – a large number of sockets will be needed. In addition to the good lighting mentioned above, blackout facilities will also be useful in a physics classroom. The visual method of teaching the subject is recognised throughout the world as one of the most effective. Not a single paragraph of a textbook, even with the most colourful pictures, will give a pupil such an idea of the processes taking place as an experiment or a demonstration will. That is why a physics classroom must also be furnished with technical teaching aids. Only in this way, besides giving an excellent understanding of the subject of physics, will the teacher also be able to help develop the pupils' memory and thinking.
