Lashkarev, Vadim Evgenyevich

Vadim Evgenyevich Lashkarev (7.10.1903—1.12.1974) was a Soviet physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1945). He was born in Kiev. He graduated from Kiev University (1924). In 1924-30 he was a postgraduate student and worked at the Kiev Research Chair of Physics, in 1930 —35 he was head of a laboratory at the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute and in 1935 — 39 head of a chair at the Arkhangelsk Medical Institute. In 1939 —60 he was head of a department at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and at the same time (1944 — 57) head of a chair at Kiev University. From 1960 he was head of a department at the Institute of Semiconductors of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (director in 1960-70). His research concerned the physics and technology of semiconductors, the optics of X-rays, electron diffraction and biophysics. In 1926, together with V. P. Linnik, he developed a method for determining the refractive index for X-rays. In 1941 he proposed the thermal-probe method for studying how resistivity is distributed into the depth of the barrier layer, and he was the first to detect the p—n junction in cuprous oxide. He created photocells with an anti-barrier layer. He discovered (1946) the bipolar diffusion of nonequilibrium current carriers and constructed (1948) a general theory of the photo-emf in semiconductors. He carried out (1948 — 70) fundamental studies of photoelectric phenomena in semiconductors, in particular of the mechanism by which the photo-emf arises and the laws it obeys, of linear and nonlinear conductivity, of the surface, electrophysical and other properties of semiconductors, of electronic processes in AIIBVI compounds and of the way semiconductor devices work. He founded a school of physicists (V. I. Lyashenko, E. G. Miselyuk, O. V. Snitko, P. I. Baransky, V. G. Litovchenko, V. A. Romanov, V. I. Strikha, G. A. Fedorus, M. K. Sheinkman and others). In 1956 —70 he was editor-in-chief of the “Ukrainian Journal of Physics”. State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1981, posthumously).
