Mário Schenberg (born 2.07.1916) is a Brazilian physicist and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (1942). He graduated from the University of São Paulo, where he worked in 1936-37; in 1938-42 he was in Rome, Zurich, Paris, Washington, Princeton and Chicago, in 1942 — 48 at the University of São Paulo (professor from 1944), in 1948 —53 at the University of Brussels, and from 1953 professor at the University of São Paulo.
His work was in the field of theoretical, mathematical and experimental physics, mathematics and astrophysics. In 1940 — 41, with G. Gamow, he pointed out the important role of neutrinos in the sharp increase in luminosity in the explosions of novae and supernovae. He carried out (1952) studies on the theory of ionisation losses at relativistic energies and the polarisation effects connected with them.
