Ramsauer, Carl

Carl Ramsauer (6.02.1879-24.12.1955) was a German physicist. He was born in Oldenburg. In 1902 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Kiel. In 1907 — 28 he worked at the University of Heidelberg (as professor from 1915), in 1928 —45 he was professor at the Higher Technical School in Danzig (now Gdańsk, Polish People's Republic), and from 1945 at the University of Berlin (rector in 1950 — 51). His work was in atomic physics. He studied the interaction of slow electrons and protons with gas atoms. In 1921, in studying the scattering of slow electrons in argon, he detected an anomalous character of their interaction with neutral atoms (the Ramsauer effect). In 1914 he developed a new method of studying the photoelectric effect, the method of deflecting photoelectrons in a magnetic field, with which he confirmed the quantum theory of the photoelectric effect (the Ramsauer experiment).
